Zlatan Ibrahimović has signed a one-year contract extension with Milan, the club announced on Monday.

The Sweden forward’s previous contract expired at the end of June and he is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines as he recovers from a knee operation.

But Milan have confirmed the 12-month extension until June 30, 2023 which will take him beyond his 41st birthday.

Though not a regular last season, Ibrahimović was instrumental in helping a young Milan team overcome the odds and clinch an improbable Serie A title.

He arrived for his second spell with the club immediately following a harrowing 5-0 hammering by Atalanta which painted a stark picture of where Milan were.

But in just two-and-a-half years, they have risen to the top of Serie A to win their 19th title – and Ibrahimović’s second with the club.

This was the 40-year-old’s seventh Serie A title, having previously won with Inter and the Juventus, thought his two Scudetto successes with the Bianconeri were later stripped following the Calciopoli scandal.
