“If we were to finish in the top seven, it would be going beyond expectations,” said De Zerbi on Sassuolo Channel.
“On paper, there are at least seven teams stronger than Sassuolo this season, but we’re not interested in what happens on paper. We want to keep aiming higher and last term’s eighth place was not enough.”
Sassuolo are trying to follow in the footsteps of Atalanta, the provincial side that with low costs and a smart youth academy, made it to the Champions League quarter-finals.
“Atalanta are a complete team. They have history, a strong team, great fans and club. They are one of the big sides in the league and it disappoints me tomorrow more than many other games that it’ll be behind closed doors.
“In my view, Atalanta are just as good as Juventus, Inter, Milan, Napoli or Roma. That tells you the difficulty level we’re going into tomorrow.”
