Walter Zenga is still bitter about Cagliari’s disallowed goal against Atalanta as the new handball rule was ‘invented by someone who likes table football’.

Giovanni Simeone’s opener during the 1-0 defeat to Atalanta was chalked off after the striker barely brushed the ball with his hand in the build-up.

“We have to only think about this game because we have to treat each game individually,” Zenga said at a press conference.

“You must always look at a match in its entirety, how it develops and the various situations that arise: with 11 v 11 we created as much as Atalanta, also because Simeone’s goal that was ruled out, because of a rule invented by someone who likes table football, with men without arms, could’ve changed everything.

“Then we went down to 10 against a team who have scored 83 goals… If Cragno was the best player on the pitch, I don't see where the problem is: I liked the team, just as I liked them at Bologna.

“In Emilia-Romagna, however, there was an incredible emergency on our part as our players took to the field with injections.

“These guys deserve respect. I defend them because they all train hard and make great sacrifices.

“In the last two games, we’ve played 120 minutes of great football. The other 60 were with a man down, but numbers must be read objectively.

“Fiorentina are an excellent team and Iachini’s a great friend of mine. Sometimes, it happens that you have a season like theirs.”

The coach then admitted some of Cagliari’s players were still adjusting to playing behind closed doors.

“There’s no comparison with what it was like then. They are two completely different and incomparable worlds.

“I just told the lads to remember those days but that it’s a different situation now.”
