Italy international Cristiano Piccini had surgery today to remove the protective plaque and screws that were inserted into his knee in August 2019.

The 27-year-old former Fiorentina player is now at Valencia and managed to earn three senior Italy caps before his devastating injury.

During pre-season training, he suffered a fracture to the patellar in his right knee – essentially a broken kneecap.

A plaque was introduced during the surgery to keep it stable and help the bone to heal, along with several screws.
