There is a new player in the squad, as Cutrone completed the transfer on an 18-month loan with obligation to buy from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“I will evaluate his condition in training today. He is a striker with certain characteristics, which is why we signed him, and believe he can improve a great deal with more work,” said the coach in his press conference.

“Chiesa was out injured for a while and is still getting back up to speed. As time goes on and he gets in better shape, he could also play on the wing, but at the moment he’s a forward. He reminds me a little of Paulo Dybala when I had him at Palermo.”

Castrovilli is also expected to take a more advanced role in his impressive debut Serie A season.

“I always ask my midfielders to push into the final third, which he did at times against Bologna, but we didn’t get the last ball right. We are working on those attacking movements, including with Castrovilli.”

Iachini replaced Vincenzo Montella over the Christmas break and made his debut in a dramatic 1-1 draw at Bologna.

“With a little more determination and sharpness, we could’ve taken home the win against Bologna last week, but then Riccardo Orsolini’s equaliser was spectacular. Putting it in at the near post from that angle was remarkable.

“We have to focus on the positives from every match, show more courage and less fear. I told the lads, we have to face SPAL as if they were Juventus, because after all they have beaten Torino and Lazio.

“SPAL have worked with the same coach for years, whereas we are just getting to know each other. We require a great performance both on a tactical and individual level.

“We are going through a rough moment, but must work to turn the wheel of fortune in our favour. Character is going to be crucial.”
