Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis had looked into sacking Carlo Ancelotti last summer and replacing him with Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini, according to Sky Sport Italia.

Ancelotti was dismissed following Napoli’s 4-0 against Racing Genk that guaranteed progression into the knockout stages of the Champions League last night, and will be replaced by Rino Gattuso.

However, Sky Sport Italia expert Gianluca Di Marzio reports that despite the recent downturn in relations between the pair, De Laurentiis had considered sacking Ancelotti as far back as last season.

The pundit claims that their relationship began to break down between April and May, when Napoli’s season limped over the finish line.

De Laurentiis supposedly sounded out Gasperini about taking over the job, under the pretense of calling to ask about Josip Ilicic.

The Atalanta coach ultimately rejected the approach, but Di Marzio states that had he said yes, Ancelotti would’ve been relieved in the summer.

Ancelotti took over the Partenopei in June 2018.
