The Salentini have a very strong away record with two wins out of three and hope to ruin Atalanta’s inauguration of the new-look Gewiss Stadium.

“You can say one team is stronger than the other, but in football you have to prove it on the pitch,” said Liverani.

“At the end of the day, anything can happen in those 90 minutes and the hierarchy can be overturned with spirit. It’s up to us to make life difficult for them.”

Atalanta have lost both Champions League fixtures so far, including a last-gasp midweek meeting with Shakhtar Donetsk on the counter-attack.

“They do like to put a lot of men forward into the opposition penalty area, but that also means they risk being completely exposed if they lose the ball in that situation.

“Atalanta have been in the top spots for several seasons now, so they cannot be considered a flash in the pan. Last term they finished third, while this summer they invested heavily to ensure they could handle three tournaments.”
