Dries Mertens explained away his cheeky goal celebration for Napoli after his wife complained it was “most deceptive.”

When he opened the scoring in the 2-0 victory over Sampdoria on Saturday, the Belgium international put the ball under his shirt in celebration.

This is traditionally used as a symbol of a pregnancy in the family, so people thought congratulations might be in order.

When he opened the scoring in the 2-0 victory over Sampdoria on Saturday, the Belgium international put the ball under his shirt in celebration.

This is traditionally used as a symbol of a pregnancy in the family, so people thought congratulations might be in order.

“And the award for most deceptive celebration goes to Mister Mertens,” wrote his wife Kat on Instagram.

Dries did explain the reasoning behind it on social media.

“I dedicate a goal to my friend Dolly, who has a belly like a football.”

The position of sitting on the floor with a steering wheel in his hands was a clue, as Dolly is a taxi driver, real name Antonio Maturo.

“Thanks for the dedication brother, but you should also say I’m a great taxi driver!”
