Senad Lulic believes “competition for places is healthy for everyone” at Lazio. “Our objective remains the Champions League.”

Lazio finished eighth in Serie A last season, but won the Coppa Italia, which put them directly into the Europa League group phase.

“This is a united group, but there are so many strong teams in Italy now that we need a perfect performance. Hopefully that can help us give our all.

“We always keep our heads held high and with the mentality that we will win. There can be peaks and troughs during a season, with some unexpected defeats, such as ours against SPAL and Chievo. We must always play as if I’s our last game.”

Milinkovic-Savic may well have had his final match for Lazio, as La Repubblica claims he is on the verge of a €75m plus bonuses move to Manchester United.

“Milinkovic is an important player, as they all are,” noted Lulic. “He’s been here for several years and he knows what it means to play for Lazio.

“Competition for places is healthy for everyone, it keeps them on their toes. It’s the only way to improve.”
