Van de Beek’s deflection got Ajax back into Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg after Cristiano Ronaldo had put Juve ahead, before Matthijs de Ligt scored the winner to send the Dutch club through.

“After my goal in the 34th minute, I thought about my friend Nouri,” the 22-year-old told De Telegraaf, referring to Abdelhak Nouri, the former Ajax player who suffered brain damage during a preseason friendly.

“I'll never forget it. He would’ve been proud if he’d seen Ajax play like that in the second half.

“We had a hard time before the break and overall Juve were slightly better than us in the first half, but we played really well after we came back out.

“I think we could’ve scored at least five goals.”
