The Giallorossi won their ‘debut’ under Ranieri last week, beating Empoli 2-1 just days after the departures of Coach Eusebio Di Francesco and director of sport Monchi.

It was a difficult game on which to judge Ranieri’s approach, because Dzeko, Federico Fazio and Aleksandar Kolarov were suspended, with Daniele De Rossi, Kostas Manolas, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Cengiz Under injured.

Some of those problems remain, because Alessandro Florenzi sits out a ban, while Kolarov, De Rossi, Manolas, Pellegrini, Under and Javier Pastore are still on the treatment table.

Ranieri said from the start he wanted to use Schick and Dzeko together, something Di Francesco usually shied away from, and he gets his opportunity this evening.

It’s a 4-4-2 formation with Kluivert and El Shaarawy moved out to the wings, making Juan Jesus a left-back, but Zaniolo is not risked after a recurring calf problem.

These points are precious for Roma, because Milan in third and fourth-placed Inter go head-to-head tomorrow night, so it’s an opportunity to close the gap.

SPAL are still at risk of relegation, sit fourth from bottom and only two points clear of the drop zone.

Manuel Lazzari is back in the starting XI and that is a huge boost for the Spallini, as the Italy international is their most influential player on the right flank.

Mirco Antenucci gets the nod as Andrea Petagna’s strike partner, with Thiam out injured, but Thiago Cionek returns from suspension.

SPAL won at the Stadio Olimpico in October, one of the worst results in Di Francesco’s tenure, so beating Roma home-and-away would be something they achieved only once before in 1965-66.

SPAL: Viviano; Bonifazi, Cionek, Vicari, Fares; Lazzari, Missiroli, Murgia, Kurtic; Petagna, Antenucci

Roma: Olsen; Karsdorp, Fazio, Marcano, Juan Jesus; Kluivert, Nzonzi, Cristante, El Shaarawy; Schick, Dzeko
