There wasn’t even time to take him to the hospital, so his body was covered by a sheet in the Curva Sud.

There are reports in the newspaper Nuova Sardegna that a small group of Fiorentina fans sang an insulting chant during the incident: ‘Just die.’

It would be particularly horrific for this to occur considering the game had been halted at the 13th minute for a standing ovation in memory of Davide Astori, the former Cagliari and Fiorentina defender who died of a cardiac irregularity a year ago.

Several of the other Fiorentina fans who were in that section expressed their disgust at the small group responsible for these chants.

Fiorentina have also released a statement "condemning anyone who did not show solidarity" with Cagliari and the stricken supporter.
