Gian Piero Gasperini admits he’s not sure whether to be annoyed or happy with Atalanta’s 3-3 Coppa Italia semi-final draw away to Fiorentina.
“I am quite annoyed, because we controlled the game for most of it and made mistakes to allow Fiorentina back in,” the Coach told Rai Sport.
“It’s a good result in terms of qualification, but also a wasted opportunity to win on the night. We were 2-0 up and unfortunately an error with a few too many futile passes at the back invited Fiorentina to boost their confidence. They hadn’t really done much until then.
“Fiorentina have some very fast players like Federico Chiesa and Luis Muriel, who can get between the lines and burst past you if given time and space. We are a team that likes to attack, so inevitably we leave something to the opposition too.
“Josip Ilicic and Papu Gomez did well for us between the lines, but perhaps we should’ve given more central service to Duvan Zapata. Overall, we’re satisfied with the performance.
“We’ll meet again on Sunday, this time in Serie A, and put the Coppa Italia aside for two months, but let’s be clear we really want to reach the Final. It’s the first of two legs, it’s played away from home, so evidently it’s a result we would’ve been happy with beforehand.
“There are 13 matches to go in Serie A, so Sunday is a very important test as well.”
Atalanta won their only Coppa Italia in 1963, so what was Gasperini doing at the time?
“I did exist, unfortunately, but I don’t remember it… We want to reach the Final, as it would be a great achievement.”
