Coach Beppe Iachini admits "Fiorentina did better" in the Tuscan derby, but sees Empoli's eventual 3-1 defeat as "part of a growth process.”

The Azzurri took the lead in the first half with a tap-in by Rade Krunic, but were eventually demolished 3-1 by an aggressive Viola side.

"We were defeated in a game that was very important for us," admitted Iachini on Radio Rai. "We were looking for continuity, we played an excellent first half and we even found the lead.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't execute the final pass that would have led to our second goal, and after they equalised, everything got a lot more difficult.

"We wanted to start off strong in the second half, but we lost [Ismael] Bennacer in the midfield, and this also affected our balance.

"We made a few mistakes, then we conceded a goal on the counter to make it 3-1 and that was that. Fiorentina did better in the second half.

"We have many young players, we should have turned this into a contest of character. At times we managed that, too.

"Unfortunately, we lost a few too many balls and were a little too timid, but it's all part of a process of growth for these lads."
