Manchester United approached Roma chief Monchi to become their new sporting director, but he reportedly turned them down.

According to the Daily Mail and Daily Express in England, the Premier League club is looking for a figure to help Jose Mourinho handle the stresses of the transfer market and dealing with players.

The favourite for the role is Paul Mitchell, currently at RB Leipzig with past experiences at Tottenham, Southampton and MK Dons.

However, the first choice had been Monchi, who turned down Manchester United as he only recently committed to Roma.

Former goalkeeper Monchi was director of sport at Sevilla from 2000 to 2017, when he tried a new adventure in Serie A.
