“This game certainly is important, for the victory we haven’t had in a while and to rediscover our confidence,” the director told Sky Sport Italia.

“We decided to make many changes ahead of Monday’s match with Atalanta, but we still want to put in a good performance and end the group stage on a high.

“If I knew what the problem was, I wouldn’t be here! We are missing a great deal in terms of mentality and must realise that at a certain level we’ve got to be there mentally for the whole game. Our approach to the last few matches was not appreciated.

“We must try to dominate from the start, so our reaction in the second half isn’t good enough. We don’t need alibis, as we must try to play every game to the best of our abilities and go for the win.

“Last season should’ve taught us a lesson, as we missed out on the Champions League by one point.”

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has been criticised in the media and even fans turned against him with an offensive banner.

“He has been working hard, the statistics show he ran over 13km on Saturday. He is missing a goal, some decisive moment that can increase his confidence.

“He is still 23 years old and has to understand how to handle situations. He’ll emerge eventually, we just need to leave him be.”
