SPAL Coach Leonardo Semplici explained the tactical adjustments that allowed a 2-0 victory away to Roma despite going down to 10 men.

Andrea Petagna’s penalty broke the deadlock in the first half, then Kevin Bonifazi rose to nod in a Mirko Valdifiori corner.

“I had to sweat as well on the touchline today. We put in a strong performance and picked up perhaps some points we deserved in other games, taking away three points from a great Roma side,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We did not start well, so we moved to 4-4-2 and it gave us more confidence, we were able to push up and cause Roma problems. I tip my hat to the lads, as a victory here is truly extraordinary.”

Going into the Stadio Olimpico, Roma had won four on the bounce in all competition and SPAL had lost four in a row.

“Some players returned from international duty a little tired, but despite making four or five changes, we were still able to put in the performance I wanted.

“It was a struggle and we soaked up pressure, but the victory really does boost our confidence going forward. It’s unthinkable to come here and focus only on defending, so we had to ensure we didn’t go too deep and kept trying to cause them problems.”
