The Calabrese club appealed to have Chievo’s penalty imposed from last season, which would’ve allowed them to take the place of the Flying Donkeys in the top flight.

Chievo were penalised for inflating the cost of players they traded with Cesena – who went bankrupt this summer – to create around €25m of false profits.

The Federal Prosecutor had requested a 15-point deduction, but today the verdict was just three points.

“It’s at the very least ridiculous, as basically Chievo were allowed to fiddle their accounts for three years and were penalised by one point per year. It’s a joke,” Crotone President Vrenna told Radio Sportiva.

“It’s another ugly chapter in the history of Italian football. It’s almost as if they planned the timing too: extend the investigation to September so they can reach a sentence like this.

“I am bitter, as we are a very small club and when we build a team, we pay close attention to the balance sheets. It’s not a level playing field if other clubs are engaging in false accounting.”
