“The past speaks and I just have to give my contribution to ensure they get back to experiencing European nights.”

That might not be possible next season, because Milan were denied a settlement agreement with UEFA and could be excluded from the Europa League.

“I am not remotely worried, I’m very calm. They’ll know how to deal with this situation.”

Reina also faces internal competition from Gianluigi Donnarumma, assuming the 19-year-old does stay at San Siro.

“We are talking about the goalkeeper who will be the first choice for the Italian national team for the next 15 years. He has an extraordinary career ahead of him.

“Donnarumma is an exemplary professional and I’m sure we’ll form a special bond. I respect him and if anything I’ll try to learn a few tricks from him.

“Meanwhile, he’ll make me feel younger. That’s not bad, is it?”

A return to the Stadio San Paolo as an opponent is the date Reina knows will dominate his thoughts.

“The date of the Napoli game is one that I and my family await with anxiousness. I don’t know how I’ll experience it, but I do know it’ll be very emotional, just as it has been every time I set foot in that stadium.

“I will never stop thanking Napoli.”
