“It’s true that two exciting matches against Barcelona and Lazio are going to dominate focus, so finding the same motivation against Genoa won’t be that simple,” the director of sport told Mediaset Premium.

“The Coach worked on the minds of the players, we are ready for a difficult game and it is just as important as the one with Barcelona. We’re fighting for a position that will decide our future.

“The last three rounds have all had their different issues. We deserved more against Bologna, lost to Fiorentina despite having 26 shots on goal and were unlucky in the derby.

“It’s beautiful to see the fans queuing up overnight for tickets to the Champions League semi-final. The fans are in love with the team and are so passionate.

“I don’t know if that puts more pressure on, but it’s good that we can make so many fans happy. I’ve always believed the point of football is to make the fans happy.”

Monchi was asked if he’d trade a top four finish in Serie A with reaching the Champions League Final.

“Only if we win the Final!”

The winners of the tournament are automatically qualified for next season.
