World Cup hero Paolo Rossi has returned to Vicenza, as an ambassador and independent director.

The Lanerossi were declared bankrupt in January, with control of the name and history of the club passing to the mayor of the city.

Fashion mogul Renzo Rosso then bought the club, merging them with Bassano Virtus so they could register for Serie C.

Rossi, who was top-scorer as Italy won the 1982 World Cup, scored 60 goals in 94 league games for the club, and has returned under the new ownership.

“I am happy to be part of a large family which I have never forgotten,” Rossi said, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I accepted the proposal of Renzo Rosso, because he is a serious and concrete entrepreneur and everything is now in place to build the Vicenza of the future.”
