Della Valle resigns from Fiorentina
Thursday 24 September, 2009

Andrea Della Valle has resigned from his position as President of Fiorentina with immediate effect after weeks of speculation.

The 48-year-old revealed his decision through a conference call to the board this morning and will be temporarily replaced by Mario Cognini.

Della Valle is said to have been very upset by protests held by the club's fans criticising his conduct in the transfer market.

Fiorentina sold Felipe Melo to Juventus this summer and didn't reinforce as expected, sparking outrage.

However, the reality is Della Valle needs to spend more time reorganising Tod's, the family business, which produces shoes and other leather goods.

Earlier this week, Fiorentina Coach Cesare Prandelli allied himself to the Della Valle family, insisting that Andrea was the reason why he decided to commit to the club in the first place.

Stevan Jovetic has also tried to show his support for Della Valle by dedicating a goal to him.

It is as yet unknown what this means for Fiorentina's ownership, though it is not expected to compromise their plans for a new stadium and theme park.
