Parma caused a huge upset by winning 3-2 away to Fiorentina, leapfrogging the Viola in the table!
Only one point separated these teams going into the game, as this was a head-to-head for Champions League spots. Cesare Prandelli, Sebastien Frey, Marco Marchionni and Alberto Gilardino faced their former club, but Adrian Mutu, Alessandro Gamberini and Stevan Jovetic were injured plus Riccardo Montolivo sat out a ban. Parma missed Alberto Paloschi, Andrea Pisanu, Antonelli and Manzoni.
Valeri Bojinov wasted a golden opportunity in the first three minutes, as a lucky ricochet sent him clear on goal, but he fired wide from nine yards.
Fiorentina also had several early chances, with Mario Alberto Santana unable to get on the end of a Juan Manuel Vargas free kick and Marco Donadel's effort charged down. A splendid Donadel volley hit a Parma defender in the box to prevent further danger.
Cristiano Zanetti turned defender by bravely sliding in to stop Blerim Dzemaili from scoring. Nicola Amoruso was flagged offside in a tight but correct decision that had sent him one-on-one.
Gilardino smartly spread the play to the right flank for an unmarked Marchionni, but Antonio Mirante stood his ground and parried the chip with one hand. However, from the set play he could do nothing on Gilardino's looping header from six yards into the far corner.
Parma equalised with a well-worked move. Dzemaili threaded through for Cristian Zaccardo down the right and he crossed low into the centre for Amoruso to come sliding in for the tap-in from six yards.
Straight after the restart Parma turned the game around completely. Former Viola star Bojinov was left completely unmarked as he sprung the offside trap on a long Daniele Galloppa free kick and at full stretch hit a volley past the stranded Frey from six yards.
Fiorentina hit back and Gianluca Comotto slid on to a smart through ball to force Mirante into a save with his feet. The move continued and Vargas curled just past the far post.
Gilardino was struggling with a knee injury, but he still scored the Viola's equaliser. Like the first goal, it was from a whipped in Vargas corner and his precise glancing header from six yards slotted into the far bottom corner, bouncing just in front of Mirante.
Fiorentina's tails were now up and they poured forward, Castillo's header from a marvellous Vargas cross deflected inches over the bar.
However, Parma struck with a classic counter-attack to restore their advantage! Substitute Davide Lanzafame sprung the offside trap on a long Christian Panucci ball over the top, raced towards Frey and slid to prod it into the far corner with the outside of his right foot.
Lanzafame nearly got a second, but was unable to turn between a crowd of defenders in the box. At the other end Mirante fumbled a cross and was fortunate that his defence was able to clear before Gilardino could pounce.
Marchionni got in front of Castellini to head Manuel Pasqual's cross off target at the back post.
The tension got to Fiorentina and it exploded in the final four minutes. Donadel went in two-footed on Stefano Morrone and the referee at first let play continue, but then stopped it a few moments later when the Parma player was still down injured and flashed a second yellow card. The Tuscans were furious, as they felt the official had changed his mind because of the Parma reaction.
After five minutes of injury time, there was further controversy when Morrone's clumsy clearance in the box appeared to touch his hand, but the referee waved play on. In the final move Gilardino aimed another soaring header but this time Mirante was at full stretch to fingertip off the line!
