Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis opened the door to Walter Mazzarri and Edinson Cavani’s possible departure. “If they leave, we’ll still have a great squad.”
The patron was speaking at a public event this evening and shrugged off questions about the Coach and star striker.
“We will not disappoint the fans,” said De Laurentiis. “If Mazzarri remains and Cavani leaves, then we will build a great squad.
“If even Mazzarri were to leave, then we’ll still have a great squad. I won’t swap Mazzarri for anyone, but it depends only on him. Mazzarri might change President, but I won’t change Mazzarri for another Coach.
“I chose him and have been working with him very well for many years. If he is fed up and wants to take a break or go for another experience, then that is purely his decision.”
Mazzarri has refused to address his future until the end of the season, even though his contract expires in June.
As for Cavani, the forward is hot property on the transfer market for the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City.
“Cavani will stay, as I think only two clubs in the world can spend the €70m needed to activate his buy-out clause,” continued De Laurentiis.
“Cavani has always showed he is very attached to the Napoli jersey. Obviously, a lad of 25 is going to be attracted by the idea of a club like Barcelona or Real Madrid.”
The last week has been particularly tense for the Uruguayan, with gossip magazines claiming his poor scoring form is down to an affair with a 22-year-old student. She was harassed online and in the street by angry fans, but today denied there was anything romantic between them.
“We do not go into the private lives of our players. Cavani is a player, but he is also a man and this is why he has a private life that has nothing to do with me,” commented the President.
