Francesco Totti makes history with the Roma generation game, Rodrigo Palacio rescues Inter, while Juventus and Lazio maintain their taboos as Susy Campanale sums up the Serie A Week 27 stats.
Francesco Totti became the all-time second top scorer in Serie A history with 225 goals in 525 games. He is now on a par with Gunnar Nordahl, behind only Silvio Piola on 274. Er Pupone started that run in Roma 1-1 Foggia on September 4, 1994 – Alessio Romagnoli was born on January 12, 1995. Romagnoli scored on his full Serie A debut, having come up through the Giallorossi youth academy, and is the youngest scorer of the season.
Totti has put four goals past Genoa in their last five encounters. This season eight of Totti’s 10 goals have been scored in the first half. Marco Borriello had never previously scored against Roma for six different clubs (Empoli, Reggina, Treviso, Milan, Genoa and Juventus).
Genoa had their first taste of defeat under Davide Ballardini after two wins and three draws. The Grifone have won a Serie A fixture away to Roma just once in the last 62 years, a 1-0 result in January 1990 joined by 23 losses and four draws.
Juventus have not won a Serie A game in Naples since a 2-1 result in September 2000, followed by four consecutive defeats and two draw. In all competition, Napoli have won only one of their last seven games against Juve, the Coppa Italia Final in May 2012. The Partenopei are unbeaten in 11 Serie A rounds, but the last five were draws.
Giorgio Chiellini has scored three goals against Napoli in his career, two of them at the San Paolo, as they become his joint favourite targets along with Lazio. The defender hadn’t found the net since a 3-1 win over Catania on February 18, 2012. Gokhan Inler has now scored five times this season from outside the penalty area, all from open play.
Goran Pandev has not scored in 20 Serie A games, as his last strike was against Udinese on October 7. Juventus have now scored 10 goals in the opening 15 minutes, more than any other team.
Lazio have not won at San Siro since a Paolo Maldini own goal on September 3 1989, followed by nine draws and 14 losses. Giampaolo Pazzini has put nine goals past the Biancocelesti in 19 games, making them his favourite victims on a par with Lecce. Il Pazzo has netted 12 League goals in 12 starts, on average one for every 106 minutes of football. Milan celebrated their seventh consecutive home victory. Kevin-Prince Boateng’s last Serie A goal at San Siro was in a 1-0 win over Genoa on April 25 2012.
Inter celebrated an away victory after scraping just one point from their last seven Serie A travels since a 3-1 at Juventus on November 3, but for the first time this season conceded two goals in the opening 20 minutes. The Nerazzurri have earned an extra 14 points from trailing situations.
Rodrigo Palacio came off the bench to bag a brace and set up another, meaning he has been involved in Inter’s last 13 Serie A goals. La Trenza had also netted against Catania in Week 8. Ricky Alvarez got his first League goal since April 25 2012, a 3-1 win away to Udinese.
Catania had been without defeat in seven rounds, their best run since 2006, with four wins and three draws. The Elefantini had failed to win just one of their previous six games at the Massimino, a 0-0 with Torino. Giovanni Marchese hadn’t found the net since the opening weekend’s 2-2 draw at Roma.
Fiorentina-Chievo has never ended in a top flight stalemate, as it provided six home wins and three for the visitors. When the Tuscans have fielded ‘Three Tenors’ Alberto Aquilani, David Pizarro and Borja Valero together, they’ve earned nine wins, one draw and a single defeat. Marcelo Larrondo got his debut Viola goal, as he hadn’t scored in Serie A since Siena’s 2-1 win at Atalanta on April 7 2012. It was also his team’s 19th from dead ball situations, including penalties.
Antonio Di Natale broke his six-game goal drought with his 150th Serie A strike in an Udinese jersey – 168 including his Empoli experience – and Pescara had been the only current team in the Division he hadn’t scored against. Udinese celebrated an away victory after one point from their previous four attempts.
Pescara have one point from eight rounds, enough to fire Coach Cristiano Bergodi. He had taken over on November 20 after Giovanni Stroppa resigned, notching up three wins, one draw and 10 defeats. Stroppa’s tally on the bench had been three victories, two stalemates and eight losses.
Parma are without a win in eight, including five defeats, but Sampdoria have conceded just once in the last six games. This was their fourth home victory on the trot and Mauro Icardi scored his eighth goal in 2013, so only Lionel Messi on 13 and Cristiano Ronaldo with 10 have had more in this calendar year among the top five European Leagues.
Cagliari’s unbeaten run came to an end after four wins and three stalemates, including two consecutive away victories. Bologna’s last six matches at the Dall’Ara have seen a total 21 goals, just one with fewer than three strikes. Saphir Taider had not scored in Serie A since a 2-1 defeat at Juventus on October 31. Of Alessandro Diamanti’s eight goals this season, five came at the Dall’Ara.
Atalanta registered only their second ever Serie A victory in Siena, along with three draws and two defeats. The Orobici had previously kept just one clean sheet in 16 rounds. The Tuscans ended their run of three consecutive home wins in which they had scored seven goals and conceded only one. Giacomo Bonaventura took his seasonal tally to six goals, but hadn’t scored since November 18 away to Fiorentina and this was his first Serie A brace.
Torino and Palermo also drew 0-0 at the Stadio Barbera earlier this season. This is the 13th time in 27 rounds that the Sicilians have failed to score and also the Granata’s sixth 0-0 of the campaign. The Rosanero welcomed back Gian Piero Gasperini, but extended their winless streak to seven draws and six defeats. Palermo only have one Serie A victory in Turin, 1-0 in October 1932, along with four draws and 16 losses.
