Walter Mazzarri has praised Napoli for their work in the January transfer window ahead of the trip to Chievo. “We can close the gap on the top sides.”
The Partenopei are clear in second place and could stage a genuine Scudetto push after bringing in Giuseppe Mascara and Victor Ruiz.
“We are strong and in second place, so I am happy with the way the club is operating with logic and consistency,” said the Coach.
“Teams are formed in the summer, so it is risky to make changes in January, but if we chose these two lads to introduce then it means we are convinced of their talents.
“Ruiz is young and an investment for the future. He will come with us to Verona tomorrow, but will not be on the bench.
“Mascara has experience and the kind of characteristics that mean if we were missing any of our forward players, he could replace all three of them.
“We made these moves to close the gap on the top sides, but must focus only on ourselves and our own development. Perhaps other clubs have been forced to spend a lot of money in order to counter our strength,” he smiled.
Ezequiel Lavezzi is suspended for the Bentegodi match on Wednesday evening, while Gianluca Grava and Luigi Vitale are long-term injury cases.
“Napoli have always struggled against Chievo,” warned Mazzarri of their 3-1 defeat at the San Paolo in September.
“Sergio Pellissier is a top class striker who chose to stay in Verona, while Mariano Bogliacino is doing very well. I'd have liked to keep Bogliacino at Napoli, but he preferred to leave in order to play more consistently.”
