In 1908 the black and white shirt was worn by Robur, the football arm of the long-standing cycling and gymnastics club in the tiny Tuscan city of Siena. The sport was brought to the town by University students and was quickly caught up in the tense rivalry of the ‘contrada’ tradition that to this day fuels the famous Palio horse race.

AC Siena became a professional club in 1921 and happily moved between the Second and Third Divisions. New President Paolo De Luca took charge last year and immediately pledged to bring them to the top flight for the first time in their history. Having struggled to stay in Serie B the season before, few believed the Neapolitan businessman, but the Bianconeri went on to pip star-studded Samp to the title.

The 2006-07 season saw the Robur secure a fifth season in the top flight with relative comfort, but moved to new ownership after the sad death of President De Luca.
