Carlo Ancelotti has become the first coach to eliminate Pep Guardiola from the Champions League in three different campaigns after Real Madrid beat Manchester City on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Ancelotti’s Real Madrid qualified for the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday, beating defending champions Manchester City on penalties after a 4-4 draw on aggregate.

This means Italian coach Ancelotti has become the first coach to eliminate Guardiola from the competition in three different campaigns.

As reported by Squawka on X, formerly Twitter, Ancelotti had previously eliminated Guardiola in the 2014 and 2022 semifinals.

Ancelotti is the only coach to have lifted the Champions League trophy four times, twice with Milan and twice with Real Madrid. The Reggiolo-born tactician has now qualified for the Champions League semis ten times.

He is also the only manager to have won domestic titles in each of Europe’s top five leagues: Italy, England, Spain, Germany and France.

Real Madrid will meet Ancelotti’s ex-club, Bayern Munich, in the Champions League semifinals.
