Brazil will finally have a new, permanent coach in the dugout when they face England at Wembley on Saturday evening, following a long-lasting, roller-coaster, but ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of Italian boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Around a year ago, the Brazilian federation (CBF) and its former President Egnaldo Rodrigues had put on record that they would do whatever it takes to bring Ancelotti over to South America after the conclusion of his spell with Real Madrid.

Brazil’s courtship of Ancelotti lasted well into the summer and beyond, which, according to reports from the BBC, sparked debates in the country as to whether it was worth waiting for any coach, regardless of their reputation.

The Ancelotti debacle has been described as one of the lowest points in the history of the Brazil national team.

Following the five-time champions’ elimination from the World Cup at the quarter-final stage in Qatar in 2022, Brazil parted company with then-boss Tite. Then, by the end of 2023, the national side had recorded more losses than victories in a calendar year for the first time ever.

Brazil have also had two caretaker managers in charge since the departure of Tite, including U20 boss Ramon Menezes and the highly-rated Fernando Diniz, both of whom proved unsuccessful in their brief stints.

One incident, when Brazil were without a coach, involved Menezes having to fly back from Argentina on a rest day during the U20 World Cup in order to announce the senior squad as there was nobody else in place able to do so. He then returned to Argenitna immediately afterwards.

The CBF had hoped that Ancelotti would be the man to steer the Brazilian ship around, however, disaster struck when the Italian confirmed that he had signed a contract extension with Real Madrid.

On Saturday, when Brazil face England in London, Brazil will finally be able to put the whole Ancelotti saga behind them and begin a new dawn under the new, permanent coach Dorival Junior.
