Gonzalo Rodriguez decided the Tuscan Derby to keep Fiorentina in the hunt for third and possibly send Siena to Serie B.
There was no shortage of motivation in this clash between local rivals, as Siena were battling to get out of the bottom three and the Viola wanted to push for a Champions League spot. Adem Ljajic began a two-match ban for insulting the referee after a controversial 1-0 home defeat to Roma, while Nenad Tomovic was also suspended, Alberto Aquilani and Momo Sissoko sidelined, David Pizarro rested. Robur had lost three on the bounce without scoring and had Dias Felipe banned.
Stevan Jovetic’s volley forced Gianluca Pegolo into a save after 60 seconds. The Viola took the lead after 13 minutes when Manuel Pasqual sprung the offside trap and his cross went in off Gonzalo Rodriguez’s stomach from point-blank range. Siena were furious and demanded it be disallowed for a handling offence, but replays suggest it was a clean goal.
Pegolo flew to palm a Borja Valero screamer on to the upright, as Fiorentina continued to push. Marcelo Larrondo sprung the offside trap, but failed to finish off the move.
Alessandro Rosina came off the bench and his cross took off a deflection off Rodriguez that nearly surprised Emiliano Viviano. Jovetic misplaced the pull-back for Mounir El Hamdaoui to waste a good opportunity.
Rosina was again dangerous, his left-foot curler beating Viviano to thump the crossbar, while Pegolo palmed a Pasqual free kick away.
Fiorentina also rattled the woodwork, as substitute Luca Toni came sliding in and the attempted tap-in rose to hit the crossbar of an open goal from six yards.
Juan Cuadrado could’ve finished off the game on the counter, but wasted the opportunity.
