SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 36 - 7 May 2013 (19.45 UK)
Roma 0 - 1 Chievo
Thereau 90 (C)
Stadio Olimpico

Cyril Thereau caused a huge upset when snatching Chievo’s victory in the final minute away to a shocked Roma.

The Giallorossi were on sparkling form and hoping to continue their march on Europe after a surprise win away to Fiorentina. Bogdan Lobont started just three days after fracturing his nose, as Maarten Stekelenburg is injured and Federico Balzaretti banned. Erik Lamela was rested to test a new strike partnership and 3-4-1-2 system. Chievo were on the fringes of the drop zone, but missed Francesco Acerbi, Sergio Pellissier, Alberto Paloschi and the suspended Luca Rigoni.

Dario Dainelli risked an own goal in the opening minute and Dodo’s effort was charged down, as was an Adrian Stoian counter-attack. Cristian Puggioni had to pluck a dangerous ball off the head of Mattia Destro.

Ivan Piris got to the by-line from a smart Francesco Totti pass and pulled back for Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, but Puggioni was crucial in reading the tap-in to smother from close range. Dario Dainelli and Daniele De Rossi got into an argument while waiting for a corner and the Chievo man stamped on his foot.

Deep into stoppages Totti blasted a free kick through the defensive wall and stung Puggioni’s gloves, beating it away in unorthodox fashion.

The Flying Donkeys were more aggresive after the restart, as Stoian’s angled drive flashed across the face of goal, then at the other end Totti’s first touch let him down on an Osvaldo assist.

Destro committed two defenders with some fine footwork to create space, but the shot was well blocked by Puggioni.

Roma went extremely close twice on 53 minutes. Totti’s deflected shot looped on to the crossbar, then from that corner Puggioni flew to parry a Destro header.

Totti had penalty appeals, but he backed into Marco Andreolli, so the referee waved play on. Miralem Pjanic curled a free kick wide of the near post and Andreolli was crucial to charge down Dodo’s dangerous strike from six yards after a give-and-go with Destro.

Chievo tried to snatch one on the counter in the final minutes, but Kamil Vacek’s effort was charged down and the Felipe Seymour follow-up was caught by Lobont.

Puggioni had to sprint off his line to capture an Erik Lamela ball over the top that had released Alessandro Florenzi from the offside trap. Florenzi also attempted a stunning volley, but shinned it over the bar.

There had been warnings and Chievo eventually took one of their chances on the counter in the final minute. Boukary Drame got down the left and whipped in a cross for Thereau to volley in with the inside of his right foot from six yards.

It at least confirmed the statistic that Roma have not played a single goalless draw this season. However, it was the first time the Giallorossi failed to net on home turf after 80 goals in 37 rounds.
