Alessandro Diamanti, Saphir Taider and Cristian Pasquato all scored fantastic goals as Bologna crushed 10-man Cagliari.
This was a relegation tussle and both were fresh from dramatic victories, as Bologna fought back to beat Fiorentina 2-1 on Tuesday and the Sardinians had a last-gasp 4-3 win over Torino. Defender Mikael Antonsson sat out a ban for the home side, with Cesare Natali still sidelined, while Cagliari were looking to extend their seven-match unbeaten run.
Bologna broke the deadlock with the first real chance of the game. Saphir Taider marked his comeback after three weeks out with an injury, exchanging passes in a give-and-go with Alberto Gilardino to hit a powerful finish from the edge of the box.
Alessandro Diamanti doubled Bologna’s advantage with an absolute gem of a goal, one of the best of his career. He ran down the right flank, cut in on to his left foot and curled a glorious finish across the face of goal into the far top corner.
Gilardino just failed to get his foot to an assist that was begging to be tapped into an empty net. Gila also threatened in first half stoppages when Michael Agazzi beat away his snapshot.
Manolo Gabbiadini went clear on a Gilardino smart reverse pass, but fired straight at Agazzi from point-blank range.
Cagliari went down to 10 men, as Francesco Pisano was shown a straight red card for his very high studs-up tackle on Archimede Morleo’s shin.
Fredrik Sorensen nearly got a third for Bologna, his header cracking the underside of the crossbar from a corner.
Cristian Pasquato completed the rout in stoppages with another fierce strike from distance that dipped under the bar.
