Heavy snow made conditions difficult, but Roma fought back to snatch a thrilling 3-2 victory away to Atalanta with Vasilis Torosidis getting his debut goal.
This game went ahead after hours of work from the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia staff to clear the snow, even though it continued to fall throughout the game.
The Giallorossi were beaming after a 1-0 win over Juventus, but lost suspended duo Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi, while Leandro Castan and Mattia Destro were still injured. Atalanta had one victory from their last 10 games and welcomed back Giacomo Bonaventura and Davide Biondini from bans, but Cristiano Del Grosso was ruled out.
Pablo Daniel Osvaldo was able to start despite needing treatment for a thigh problem during the warm-up.
Atalanta took the lead with their first real chance, as Marko Livaja scored his first goal since joining from Inter. Marquinhos went up to anticipate Carlos Carmona, but the header turned into an assist for Giacomo Bonaventura, who rolled across for Livaja to tap in at the back post.
It was a blistering start to the game under heavy snow, as Marquinho equalised when he was given time and space to push forward, so picked his spot and smashed a left-foot curler round Andrea Consigli towards the far stick.
A Miralem Pjanic free kick whistled over the bar and Osvaldo fired wide, as the snow did not stop the two teams going at it. Pjanic’s fierce shot from a corner was deflected over the bar, but the weather conditions got worse as by the half-hour mark the pitch was completely white.
The visibility may well have aided Roma in scoring their goal, as Consigli was left rooted to the spot by a Pjanic free kick over the bar into the near top corner.
Osvaldo failed to make the most of a Matteo Contini error, but Livaja completed his brace just before half-time. The youngster showed strength to push past Torosidis and volleyed in with the inside of his left boot from eight yards, the shot going in off the upright.
The start of the second half was postponed slightly so that staff could re-draw the lines on the snow-covered pitch. Fortunately the blizzard subsided too.
Carmona aimed a lob from distance on to the roof of the net and a German Denis attempt was straight at Stekelenburg.
Consigli kept Atalanta on level terms with a splendid save to deny Pjanic’s header from point-blank range, but was beaten moments later.
Roma restored their advantage with Vasilis Torosidis, who got to the by-line and wonderfully managed to steer a header across the face of goal in at the far post from the tightest of angles. It was the Greek January signing’s debut Serie A goal.
Stefano Lucchini came off the bench and immediately forced Stekelenburg to fingertip his header out from under the bar on a Carmona corner. Contini received a second yellow card for his scrap with Simone Perrotta.
Lamela should’ve got the fourth in stoppages, but he hesitated on Alessandro Florenzi’s assist and forced a fine save out of Consigli at the near post.
Sent off: Contini 89 (A)
