Lazio fought back from 2-0 down, but were eventually beaten by a Marco Rigoni goal in the dying seconds of this 3-2 Marassi thriller.
Vladimir Petkovic’s men dropped down to third place after their surprise home defeat to Chievo, ending a 16-match unbeaten run in all competition. There was a midweek boost by reaching the Coppa Italia Final, but for this game Giuseppe Biava and Andre Dias sat out bans with Antonio Candreva, Hernanes and Ederson injured. Genoa held Juventus on Davide Ballardini’s debut, albeit in controversial circumstances, and were hoping to keep the new Coach effect going. Luca Antonelli was suspended with Bosko Jankovic, Antonio Floro Flores and Juan Manuel Vargas sidelined, but Daniele Portanova and Mattia Cassani made their debuts.
The new Genoa took the lead after 16 minutes with the first real scoring opportunity. A corner was not cleared effectively, so Marco Borriello pounced to volley in from six yards.
The Rossoblu doubled their advantage thanks to a scorching Andrea Bertolacci snapshot on the counter that blazed past a helpless Federico Marchetti from 25 yards.
Cassani’s Genoa debut lasted only 25 minutes due to an injury, while Sergio Floccari just failed to get his diving header to a Michael Ciani cross.
More bad news for Lazio, as Klose picked up an ankle problem just before half-time and did not come back out for the second half.
Borriello nearly added a third with an acrobatic scissor-kick that whistled just wide, but Lazio got back into it with ex-Genoa striker Floccari.
He sprung the offside trap, hooked down a pass over the top and smashed in the half-volley off the underside of the bar.
Francelino Matuzalem was forcing his former teammates, but that didn’t stop him being booked for a horrible tackle on Cristian Brocchi. He had just come on as a substitute seven minutes earlier and had to limp off again, giving Bruno Pereirinha his Serie A debut.
Lazio should’ve completed the comeback from 2-0 to 2-2, but Sebastien Frey parried brilliantly from Senad Lulic after a Lorik Cana backheel flick, then Abdoullay Konko fired wide on the follow-up.
The Biancocelesti were pouring forward and were given a penalty when Borriello wrapped his arms round Cana’s neck to pull him down as a free kick was drifted in. Stefano Mauri stepped up and coolly converted amid the jeers of Marassi, sending Frey the wrong way.
Lazio wanted the win now and were pegging Genoa back into their own half, although Lulic was booked for stopping Ruben Olivera’s counter-attack. Juraj Kucka’s header from that free kick skimmed the crossbar.
At the 94th minute Genoa thought they had won it, but Federico Marchetti needed a magnificent save to deny Borriello. However, from that corner Marco Rigoni’s cushioned free header from seven yards gave Genoa the last-gasp victory!
