Mattia Destro returned to the Stadio Franchi and scored two as Roma fought back for a hard-fought victory in Siena.
The Giallorossi had won two on the bounce with clean sheets, but missed Erik Lamela, Rodrigo Taddei, Maarten Stekelenburg and the suspended Daniele De Rossi. Pablo Daniel Osvaldo was carrying a knock, so was only fit for the bench and Miralem Pjanic was surprisingly pushed up to the right side of the trident. Siena had eight points from the last four rounds, but were still in the bottom three thanks to their six-point penalty. Goalkeeper Andrea Campagnolo and winger Angelo were on the treatment table. Roma’s record at the Stadio Franchi is not great, as they haven’t won here since 2009.
Gianluca Pegolo got a hand to Alessandro Florenzi’s long-range snapshot and Pjanic had penalty appeals for a coming-together with Matteo Rubin. Leandro Castan only fired over when a deflected Francesco Totti cross landed at his feet.
It was Siena who took a surprise lead when a Francesco Valiani corner was whipped in for the head of Luis Neto, allowed to jump between three defenders from six yards.
Siena should’ve been 2-0 up moments later, but Alessandro Rosina turned a free header well over when totally undisturbed.
A rocket of a Totti free kick smacked on to Pegolo’s palms in a great save by the goalkeeper. The Siena shot-stopper was again called into action when flapping a deflected corner off the foot of Marquinhos.
Roma complained at a Neto challenge on Alessandro Florenzi in the area, but they did draw level with the one man who knows this stadium very well.
A Tachtsidis through ball sent Florenzi running down the left and he chipped back across the face of goal for Destro to nod in from six yards.
Roma were pouring forward now and Pjanic’s effort was deflected inches wide, then the midfielder failed to make the most of a Totti assist into the box. A Totti cross-shot was over the bar, but the pressure was building and the goal eventually arrived.
Simone Perrotta came off the bench and his angled drive from the edge of the box went through a sea of legs into the near bottom corner.
Siena poured forward and felt there was a push in the penalty area on Larrondo – frankly a tiny nudge from Marquinhos – and on the counter Pjanic rolled across for Destro to finish the game with a left-footed angled drive.
