Bottom of the table Genoa ended their run of six consecutive defeats with a surprise victory away to Atalanta.
Gigi Del Neri returned to face one of his former clubs, but did so with a Genoa side in crisis after losing six in a row – including the Derby and all five of his games in charge. Cristobal Jorquera, Luca Antonelli, Anselmo and Damiano Ferronetti missed out for the visitors, who were propping up the table. Atalanta had midfield dynamo Luca Cigarini suspended with Giampaolo Bellini, Davide Biondini, Ferreira Pinto and Daniele Capelli sidelined after their 4-1 defeat to Fiorentina.
Gugliemo Stendardo was all over Andreas Granqvist as Genoa took their first corner, but the referee and his assistants waved play on. Andrea Bertolacci skimmed the upright from the edge of the box, then he went close again when his shot was deflected inches past the far post off Tomas Manfredini’s crucial block.
Andrea Consigli needed two touches to take Marco Borriello’s snapshot out from under the bar. However, Atalanta thought they had broken the deadlock when Maxi Moralez exchanged passes with German Denis to burst into the box and fire under the bar, but the linesman had – incorrectly – raised his flag for offside.
Denis aimed a couple of headers off target, but it was Genoa who took the lead with Bertolacci’s third chance of the half.
Manfredini had been struggling with an injury and it showed, as his wayward interception of a cross from the right turned into an assist for Bertolacci to volley home from just inside the box.
Giacomo Bonaventura had penalty appeals in first half stoppages when he couldn’t get on the end of an Ezequiel Schelotto cross at the back stick thanks to Mario Sampirisi pulling him back by the shoulder. Bonaventura was also booked for his protests.
Bad news for Genoa, as Marco Borriello and Emiliano Moretti were booked, meaning they’ll be suspended for next week’s relegation tussle with Chievo.
Sebastien Frey bravely smothered at the feet of Moralez by poking the ball away from six yards when the Argentine was pulling the trigger.
Cristian Raimondi incredibly wasted the chance to equalise on 67 minutes when Giuseppe De Luca flicked on a cross, but the unmarked defender volleyed wide from six yards!
Frey palmed a Denis header out from under the bar on a corner, but Genoa ended the game with 10 men after Moretti dragged back Moralez for a second booking. Frey rescued the points in stoppages on Denis and then Raimondi’s follow-up with his foot.
Sent off: Moretti 86 (G)
