Sergio Almiron returned from injury and scored both goals as Catania got the better of Chievo.
The Elefantini hoped to rely on their solid home record and a nervous Chievo side who twice threw away a lead to draw with 10-man Udinese last week. The Flying Donkeys surprisingly won here last season, but made this trip without Marco Rigoni, Bostjan Cesar, Nicolas Frey, Cruzado, Paul Papp, Lorenzo Squizzi and the suspended Luca Rigoni. Catania welcomed back Sergio Almiron and Gonzalo Bergessio.
Castro protested for a high challenge from Dario Dainelli that clipped his ankle in the box, but the referee curiously awarded a free kick against Catania instead.
Alejandro Gomez should’ve done better, but trapped a set play and fired inches over the bar from seven yards. Papu Gomez pounced on a defensive error as Sardo’s long ball was allowed to bounce, but again blazed wide when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Bad news for Catania, as Bergessio limped off with a calf problem on his comeback from this injury.
Stefano Sorrentino had to back-pedal to pluck an audacious long-range Gomez effort out from under the bar.
Incredibly, the Sicilians were forced to make another substitution, as Marco Biagianti was in tears of agony after a nasty collision with Roberto Guana.
Chievo risked an own goal with Nicola Legrottaglie trying to clear Luciano’s corner.
Catania did eventually get a deserved opener after the restart when Sergio Almiron jumped to nod in a corner.
Doukara somehow failed to score on 67 minutes when his header whistled inches wide of the post from Francesco Lodi’s cross. At the other end, Mariano Andujar was at full stretch to fingertip a Cyril Thereau angled drive off the line.
Chievo had reason to protest when Legrottaglie brought down Pellissier just outside the box, but the referee waved play on.
Almiron completed his brace to put the points under lock and key with a fantastic curling finish from the outside left side of the area.
Pellissier smashed a great strike against the post in the final minute, as Chievo tried to get one back. Marco Andreolli achieved it with a towering header on a free kick from the right.
