Chievo were celebrating after seeing off 10-man Pescara, but there was genuine danger for the players when a freak gust of wind propelled metal advertising boards on to the pitch.
The terrifying incident occurred in the final minutes and it was very fortunate that the squads and linesmen were not in the path of the structures at the time.
The Flying Donkeys had definitely turned a corner under new boss Eugenio Corini, but Giovanni Stroppa was clinging desperately to his Pescara job going into this game. Sergio Pellissier was back after a three-week injury lay-off, though Alberto Paloschi, Gennaro Sardo, Bostjan Cesar and the suspended Kamil Vacek were out. The Delfini missed Cristian Terlizzi, Alessandro Crescenzi and Savelloni, but Manuele Blasi returned from his ban.
The rain was pouring down on the Stadio Bentegodi with very strong winds adding to the difficult conditions and large muddy patches all over the field.
Pescara went down to 10 men on the half-hour, as Simone Romagnoli cleared wrestled Cyril Thereau to the ground when he was clear on goal. From the resulting free kick, Mattia Perin had to parry a Dario Dainelli header from point-blank range.
Boukary Drame’ also went close soon after with a strike that cracked against the upright.
Chievo somehow failed to score on the hour mark, as first Luciano’s free kick was beaten away by Perin, then the Brazilian got hold of the rebound to clip the post.
The referee pointed to the spot when Samassa, who had only been on for three minutes, was clearly brought down in the area by Modesto. Luciano took the penalty duties and buried it confidently to put Chievo in front.
That opened the floodgates and Thereau sprung the offside trap – Samassa was offside, but not interfering with play – but while Perin managed to flap away the shot, he could do nothing on Stoian’s follow-up.
There was a very strange and dangerous moment on 86 minutes, as play had to be halted when a freak burst of wind propelled several metal and card advertising boards on to the pitch! They narrowly missed the linesman and it was fortunate the teams were on the other side of the field.
