Udinese had a 2-0 lead after six minutes, but Andrea Lazzari’s red card sparked a great Siena comeback for 2-2.
Times were tough for both clubs, as the Friulani were out of the Champions League play-offs and had lost both Serie A games. To make matters worse, Luis Muriel was ruled out for over two months with a microfracture in his hip, joining Emmanuel Badu, Pablo Armero and the suspended Zeljko Brkic on the absentee list.
Siena had one point from two rounds, but started the season from -6 due to the betting scandal. Dias Felipe was suspended against his former club, but Alessandro Rosina partnered Emanuele Calaio.
Udinese had a sensational start at the Stadio Franchi, as Dusan Basta made the most of a defensive error on the edge of the box to unleash a stunning half-volley that dipped under the bar.
Basta created the second moments later, bursting down the right and pulling the ball across for a diving Antonio Di Natale header from six yards.
In just six minutes Udinese were already 2-0 up, silencing the Siena crowd.
There was precious light fightback, so Serse Cosmi introduced striker Ze Eduardo for Gaetano D’Agostino after half an hour.
Despite Udinese’s comfortable status, Francesco Guidolin was still extremely tense and was sent off for dissent before half-time.
Di Natale and Massimo Paci nodded off target from set plays, but Udinese went down to 10 men after the restart. Andrea Lazzari received a second yellow card for a futile foul in midfield.
Despite that situation, Udinese again went closest to another goal when Paulo Vitor Barreto robbed Del Grosso and Neto was forced into a saving challenge on Di Natale.
Siena gained in confidence and Daniele Padelli needed a sensational save on Sestu’s header from an Angelo cross.
Ze Eduardo’s free kick cracked the crossbar when goalkeeper Padelli slipped.
They finally got their goal with Calaio’s glancing header from a Sestu cross down the left.
The wind was clearly in Siena’s sales and they were given the chance to equalise when Ze Eduardo was brought down for a penalty. Ze Eduardo took the spot-kick duties and sent Padelli the wrong way to equalise.
Udinese still could’ve won it, as Gianluca Pegolo came flying out to charge down Mehdi Benatia in stoppages. Ze Eduardo also had penalty appeals for a Maurizio Domizzi challenge.
Sent off: Lazzari 52 (U)
