The clubs involved putatively falsified their accounts to meet the demands of the agreement, and unfairly favoured Mediaset over their competitor Sky Sports.

The Serie A President had already denied all allegations in an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport, saying that he was 'calm', but in only one day he seems to have changed moods drastically.

“I'd like to reassure the supporters that I acted in full respect of the law,” he told local broadcaster Telenord. “This is a strange country, where trials take place on the papers before they reach the court-rooms.

“Now I've really had it. There's a law stating that intercepted calls can't be used, but journalists don't give a damn.

“They preach to you, but they set the example in terms of ignoring the law. We'll be taking legal action.

“My operation was transparent and I will prove that in court.

“I counted them, there's been 773 articles on the 'Genoa case'. I'm absolutely livid, this really is the limit. It's normal that when you're in this state of mind you end up going nuts.

“In this case Genoa are not the real target, even a fool would get that. We're a small club that is being used to hit higher up.

“We all know there's been a war between Mediaset and Sky over TV rights, but God knows what Genoa has to do with that.

“The most ridiculous thing is that the ringleaders are supposed to be [Lazio President Claudio] Lotito, [Milan's joint-CEO Adriano] Galliani, and myself.

“The agreement [on TV rights] was signed by Juventus and Roma too, because it was convenient for them.”
