FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio hopes Antonio Conte will stay beyond Euro 2016, as “we have no alternatives.”

The Azzurri qualified for the tournament thanks to last night’s 3-1 victory in Azerbaijan and the final game is against Norway on Tuesday.

“We passed a test, got through with a round to spare and are unbeaten in qualifying, so we could not have asked for more,” said Tavecchio in a Press conference.

“We always start tournaments hoping to win, never to aim for second. Of course, actually getting the victory is another matter.

“We hope there will be a lot of fans in Rome for the Norway game, though above all it’s an important match for the other nations in our group.”

The problem is that even finishing top of the group might not affect Italy’s seeding in the Euro 2016 draw.

“I’ve talked about the ranking problem before. They don’t take into account the four World Cups and just look at the previous two years. We’ll do everything to change the system, but right now this is the situation.”

Tavecchio was asked about his offer to renew Conte’s contract, a proposal that the Coach put “on ice” until the tournament comes along.

“We have a contract and only in football do people discuss the expiry with two years left to run. When we get closer to the expiry, then we’ll see.

“We hope to keep Conte and, if he wants to stay, this is the best place for him. We’ve become good friends and it’s certainly not true that there are problems between us. We put personal interests secondary to what is good for the Federation.

“If Conte decides to stay, then we have no alternatives. If not, then we’ll have to see what to do. It takes time to build a system and a great leader is necessary. Right now Conte is responsible for all the levels of the national team.”
