Hungary had incredibly been 1-0 down at home to the Faroe Islands, but fought back for a 2-1 victory in Group D, while Romania held Finland 1-1.

World Cup winners Germany dominated the match in Dublin, but were beaten by a classic route one goal from Shane Long, the assist coming from his goalkeeper.

That put Ireland joint second of Group D with Poland, only one point behind Germany, but ruled Scotland out of the tournament.

Scotland were leading Poland at Hampden Park, but Robert Lewandowski completed his brace with the last kick of the game for a 2-2 draw.

Serbia snatched a last-gasp 2-0 win away to Albania, Aleksandar Kolarov and Inter striker Adem Ljajic scoring in stoppages, meaning Gianni De Biasi’s men need a victory away to Armenia in order to qualify.

Portugal also beat Denmark 1-0 with a Joao Moutinho goal to qualify for Euro 2016.

They top Group I with 15 points, the Scandinavians follow on 12 and Albania with a game in hand have 11.
