Maurizio Sarri made his career European debut and was looking for his first win on the Partenopei bench after two points from three Serie A games. He dropped Lorenzo Insigne for a 4-3-3 system, bringing in Kalidou Koulibaly at the back and Jorginho for Mirko Valdifiori. Belgians Club Brugge missed Bjorn Engels, Felipe Gedoz and Jean-Charles Castelletto.

The San Paolo was mainly empty, as UEFA bans closed both Curve (ends), while only around 12,000 tickets were sold.

It took just five minutes to break the deadlock, albeit by accident, as Jose Callejon’s misplaced cross from the right looped into the far side-netting.

Napoli did precious little, but found themselves 2-0 up when Dries Mertens ghosted between defenders to tap in a Callejon cross at the near post.

Abdoulay Diaby’s volley was just wide, but the third goal was glorious. Jorginho chipped up a free kick and Mertens let it drop over his shoulder before smacking a perfect right-foot volley.

The confidence was clearly flowing and this may well be the first real glimpse of Sarri’s Napoli. It could’ve been more, but David Lopez and Faouzi Ghoulam ballooned over.

Marek Hamsik added a fourth after the restart, as Sinan Bolat failed to control a Mertens low ball from the left and the Slovak deposited into an empty net.

Duarte got in a block to prevent Mertens’ hat-trick from close range, then the little Belgian’s angled drive shaved a coat of paint off the base of the far post.

Higuain hit the side-netting, then in one move forced a point-blank range save and struck the upright on the rebound.

Callejon completed his brace, running on to an Allan through ball to pass it under the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Brugge did get the ball in the net eventually, but Leandro Pereira was offside when meeting a Pepe Reina save on Ruud Vormer.

It should’ve been 6-0, but Callejon fired over from an inspired Lorenzo Insigne pass.
