Stefano Pioli saw a “positive response” from Lazio and Alessandro Matri’s debut brace against Udinese.

The Biancocelesti needed a boost after two consecutive heavy defeats to Bayer Leverkusen and Chievo, so the 2-0 victory calmed the waters.

“I think we interpreted the game well during a delicate time and against a difficult opponent,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.

“We can improve, but I saw a positive response in terms of attitude. This result must boost our confidence, as we cannot look over our shoulders at the past. We have the squad to be competitive in every game.”

Matri arrived on loan from Milan on deadline day and immediately bagged a brace.

“I was not surprised by his impact. He hasn’t got match fitness yet, but we signed him because he’s a great striker. His condition will improve with time.”
