Italy’s European Championships qualifying opponents Croatia have sacked Coach Niko Kovac.

The former midfielder took over in October 2013, and successfully guided the team to World Cup 2014.

However, following a 0-0 draw with Azerbaijan and a 2-0 defeat to Norway in the last round of fixtures, the Croatian federation has decided to act.

“The Croatian Football Association's (HNS) executive board reached a unanimous decision to terminate our contract with Niko Kovac and his entire staff,” HNS President Davor Suker told a Press conference, as reported by Reuters.

“We will interview his potential successors in the next 10 days or so and come up with a candidate at the next HNS executive board meeting on Sept 21.”

Italy currently lead Group H, with recent results and a one-point deduction seeing Croatia fall to third in the section, behind the Azzurri and Norway.
