Gian Piero Gasperini says Genoa were 'more than certain' that Roma's Juan Iturbe would join them, but claims the team is 'still competitive'.

The Grifone's 2-0 win against Verona allowed them to compensate for the loss to Palermo in Serie A's season opener, which pleased the Coach after the game.

“We prepared the game just like this, with absolute predominance over the opponent,” he said, before turning his discussion to Iturbe.

The Grifone's 2-0 win against Verona allowed them to compensate for the loss to Palermo in Serie A's season opener, which pleased the Coach after the game.

“We prepared the game just like this, with absolute predominance over the opponent,” he said, before turning his discussion to Iturbe.

“We were all more than certain he would join us. Unfortunately, though, it seems like things will finish differently,” he said, in reference to the Giallorossi's recent turn of mind on the player.

“We'll see what happens, but it's a novelty that catches us off balance. Still, tonight we showed that we can do well regardless.

“Iturbe is the past now, we had [Blerim] Dzemaili and [Cristian] Ansaldi coming in. We're still competitive, even as we are.

“The defence and the midfield are fine and we can play with a three-man or a four-man defence.

“We have to improve on the wings. Clearly I wouldn't mind having a few more options.

“[Leonardo] Pavoletti? He's brilliant and fast, we had to wait for him for some time because of his injury but he's a real striker who can help us even when we're not in possession.

“Tonight he twisted his ankle, I think it didn't affect the tendon though.

“The international break will give us the opportunity to work on the matter of injuries as well.”
