Paulo Sousa said Fiorentina must “always play like they did tonight” after sweeping Milan aside 2-0.

“I try to tell my players what I want from them and we are seeing that attitude, taking what we do in training into a match situation and that is what a Coach wants the most,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“There was excellent quality throughout, perfect concentration to reach a perfect result against a side of great talent.

“At the start of the season I am already seeing the right ideas, quality and also aggression, so it gives us confidence going forward.

“My ambition is always to win. I do not see football any other way. I try to look at my players and along with them get the maximum individual and team performance.

“I want to see them always play like they did tonight.”

This was Sousa’s Serie A debut as a Coach, though he was a player for Juventus. Did he get tactical inspiration from Barcelona for his 4-3-3?

“I am inspired by everyone. When you analyse other Coaches and teams, you get ideas and combine them with your own to improve.”

Former Dnipro striker Nikola Kalinic was a surprise starter, but proved decisive and forced the red card from Rodrigo Ely.

“I chose Kalinic because he already has match fitness, gives us depth and understands the game.

“Federico Bernardeschi and Josip Ilicic are working well, understand everything we are doing and have intensity in their movement. We need consistency in movement and they are in the best shape for that task, so deserved to start this opening game.

"Mario Suarez knew there would be competition here and I saw Milan Badelj prepare very well during the week, so he deserved to play."
