The Rosanero were rumoured to be after the 2006 World Cup winning poacher along with Napoli, and figures within the club did nothing to hide their appreciation for the player.

“The numbers talk for him,” said Coach Iachini after yesterday's Coppa Italia game against Avellino. “And the transfer market is still open.

“We're still looking for a striker, we'll see if he works out to be the right one.”

Sorrentino was also interviewed after the game, and he was equally warm about the idea of picking up the 33-year-old.

“I'll go pick him up at the airport myself,” he said.

“He may have a few years on his back, but he can score or help score 12 goals.

“There's no need for me to say that he'd represent an extra resource for us.”
