The 23-year-old Croatia international right-back is a primary transfer target for Maurizio Sarri’s new-look Napoli, while Juventus are also interested.

“Our desire is to keep Vrsaljko and we are counting on him for next season too,” Sassuolo director general Giovanni Carnevali told Sky Sport Italia.

“We consider him to be a fundamental player for our team and want to make as few changes as possible. We want a solid campaign, so Sime is not for sale.

“Napoli did make us an offer for Vrsaljko, proposing Omar El Kaddouri, but he is not in our plans. Duvan Zapata could’ve been interesting, but he went to Udinese.

“We don’t want to sell Vrsaljko. Napoli were interested and could still be, but our desire is to keep the squad as it is.”

Sassuolo snapped up Gregoire Defrel from Cesena after links with Palermo and Everton.

“With Defrel our front line is complete. We have no interest in Alessandro Matri. Defrel was wanted by many clubs, including Genoa, so signing him is a success.

“The player chose us and we’re seeing more and more than people are aware of how solid Sassuolo’s project is.”
