Stefano Pioli admits Juventus “deserved to win the Super Cup” after Lazio failed to find a breakthrough.

The Aquile lost 2-1 in extra time in the Coppa Italia Final and fell 2-0 in Shanghai.

“Unfortunately the only thing that counted today was the result. It was a balanced game in difficult conditions for the state of the turf and the wind,” Coach Pioli told Rai Sport.

“I was certain the first side to score would get the victory. I was not worried by pre-season friendlies, but today I saw my Lazio again with the right spirit and determination. I am confident for the future.

“Both teams created few real scoring opportunities. The Juventus goal came from an unlucky Felipe Anderson backpass, while the bounce on the turf meant we couldn’t really play with the ball to feet.

“Juventus did well to take up all the spaces.”

Summer signings Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala scored for Juve, but Lazio’s newcomers were only introduced late on.

“The new players have good quality, but they just arrived a few days ago, so we had to rush things. It was an important objective, we were unable to make the most of it, but have to be at our best condition possible for the Champions League play-off in 10 days.

“Compliments to Juventus, a very strong team who deserved to win the Super Cup, but I believe this season we can do great things.”
That Champions League play-off will be against Bayer Leverkusen.

“It’s tough because the Germans are very competitive, but I continue to insist we can have our say.”
